Obituary for Wilson "Mike" Merrill

Wilson W. Merrill, 95, known best to his friends as “Mike”, given that name by his grandfather, John Michael Merrill, went to be with his Heavenly Father November 8, 2018 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Merrill was born in Mason County, February 11, 1923 in Maysville the first son of the late Lucius and Minnie Berry Merrill.

He retired after 40 years from the Carnation Can Factory and drove a school bus for both Maysville City Schools and Mason County Schools for a total of 28 years where he was honored with an award for his outstanding service. He was a member of the YMCA, RSVP, the Prime Timers and was a Mason County Frontiersman. Mr. Merrill was a volunteer policeman under Charlie Brodt and a volunteer fireman for both Stanley McGowen and Fred Breeze. He was honored as Kentucky Colonel by Governors Ernie Fletcher and Steve Beshear.

Mike had been a life-long member of the Maysville Church of the Nazarene since its beginning on Wood Street and he and his wife Juanita raised their children there as well. He served his church as head usher, drove the church bus for 25 years from Maysville to the Mt. Hope Camp Ground in Fleming County.

Survivors include his loving wife of 72 years, whom he married on July 15, 1946, Juanita Humphries Merrill. In 2016 they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with 300 friends and relatives in attendance.

He also leaves his children, Anita Gail Merrill of Maysville; Mike Merrill and wife Debbie of Mays Lick, and Cheryl Robinette and husband John of Spartanburg, South Carolina; 3 granddaughters and 6 great-grandchildren, Hillary and husband Cory Hudson and their children, Ella Paige and Lucy Elizabeth, all of Knoxville, Tennessee, Lacey and husband Nick Silvers and their children, Avery, twins Kinley and Jake, and Janie Lynn all of Edgewood, Kentucky and Amy Robinette of Charleston South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by sisters, Mary Louise Merrill, and Marguerite Merrill Hughes and brothers, Lewis “Tippy” Merrill and Lucien “Sonny” Merrill.

Funeral Services for Wilson “Mike” Merrill will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday November 11, 2018 at Brell & Son Funeral Home with Pastors Lonnie Blosser and Gordon Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Garden of Memories.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Larry Kiser, Jeff Purcell, Xandy Stewart, Cory Hudson, Nick Silvers, Jake Silvers and Chan Warner.

Honorary Pallbearers will be his Granddaughters Hillary, Lacey and Amy.
